About This Program

Provides $5B to replace diesel school buses with zero-emission and clean fuel alternatives. Priority given to high-need local educational agencies in rural, tribal, and low-income areas.

Key Requirements & Eligibility

  • 1Applicant must be a public school district, local education agency, or state education agency
  • 2Old bus must be diesel-powered and currently operated by the applicant
  • 3Replacement bus must be zero-emission (electric or hydrogen) or low-emission (propane/CNG)
  • 4Priority: districts in rural areas, serving high percentage of Title I students, or tribal land
  • 5Funding covers up to 100% of the incremental cost of ZE bus over conventional bus
  • 6Applications reviewed competitively โ€” grants awarded in annual funding rounds
